Research Synopsis

Dr. Hussain’s main area of interest is the management of post-cesarean section analgesia and minimizing the side effects of commonly used analgesic modalities. With ever-rising high-risk pregnancies the cesarean delivery rate is also going up. Data shows > 12 % incidence of chronic pain after such delivery. Studies have also found that women with persistent severe acute pain have a 2.5 fold increased risk of developing chronic pain and 3.0 fold increased risk of postpartum depression. Hence, it is imperative to adequately control acute post-cesarean delivery pain.

In Dr. Hussain’s analysis, quality assurance audits were conducted in his hospital to ensure that all elements of evidence-based multimodal analgesia were being utilized to manage postoperative pain. Feedback from audit was further used to refine the approach to this issue. A systematic review of local anesthetic techniques was then presented at international anesthetic meetings to discuss the pros and cons to manage such pain, where the presentation earned the best poster award.  At another meeting, SOAP, Dr. Hussain’s research team also presented the literature review and solution to managing postsurgical cesarean pain in patients on opioid (Buprenorphine) maintenance therapy for narcotic addiction.

Currently, Dr. Hussain is looking at the feasibility of a novel application of gabapentin for managing the common side effect of neuraxial opioid.  To assess the efficacy of this drug he will be designing a randomized clinical trial.
