Canadian Pain Society Award Winners

Dr. Hance Clarke and Professor Joel KatzThe University of Toronto Department of Anesthesia is very pleased to announce that both Dr. Hance Clarke and Dr. Joel Katz have recently been recognized in the annual awards competition of the Canadian Pain Society (CPS). As a chapter of the International Association for the study of Pain, the CPS represents Canadian scientists and health professionals who have a special interest in pain research and management. The CPS presents these national awards in recognition of excellence in the treatment of pain and academic pain research.

The CFP has awarded the 2016 Early Career Award to Dr. Hance Clarke, Assistant Professor and Director of Pain Services at Toronto General Hospital. This award recognizes oustanding achievements in pain research and management by an individual at the early stage of his career. Dr. Clarke was recognized, in part, for his funding and prolific publication of research in peer-reviewed journals as well as his dedication to patient care with the development of his novel Transitional Pain Program.

Dr. Joel Katz, Professor of Anesthesia and Canada Research Chair (Tier-I) in health Psychology, has been awarded the 2016 Outstanding Pain Mentor Award by the CFP. As a staff scientist at Toronto General Hospital, Professor Katz has made longstanding contributions to the pain field by providing outstanding mentoring to numerous pain researchers (including Dr. Hance Clarke) and clinical scientists over his career. This award is a reflection of the profound impact that Professor Katz has had on pain medicine teaching and research at local level and beyond.

The awards will be formally presented to Dr. Clarke and Professor Katz at the upcoming 36th annual CPS meeting to be held in Vancouver in May 2016.
