Dr. Byrick graduated in medicine from the University of Western Ontario (1971) and completed his postgraduate training in Anesthesia at the University of Toronto in 1977. He has been a clinical anesthesiologist at St. Michael’s Hospital since that time and continues in active clinical practice. His research focused on post-operative pulmonary complications of cardiac and orthopedic surgical procedures. He served as Chief of the Department of Anesthesia at St. Mikes (1987-93) before serving two terms as Chair, Department of Anesthesia at UofT (1993-2003). After serving as Chair, he was appointed Vice-Dean, Clinical Affairs and the UofT representative to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. He served on CPSO Council from 2004-14 and was President of the CPSO in 2012. 

He currently is Vice-Chair of the surgical panels of the Inquiries, Complaints and Reports Committee and a member of the Premises Inspection Committee of the College. He is a member of the UofT Board of Examiners (PA Assistant Program). Dr. Byrick also serves on the Board of the Institute of Safe Medications Practices - Canada; the Canadian Anesthesia Research Foundation (CARF) and SIM-one-Ontario Simulation Network.
