Department of Anesthesia, University of Toronto
Postgraduate Elective in Community Hospitals
At present in Ontario, anaesthesia is provided by 650 specialists and approximately 700 non-specialists. Approximately 50% of anaesthetists have chosen to work in non-university or non-teaching hospitals. In Toronto our Anaesthesia Program is based in large urban hospitals. Most residents do not have a previous relationship with practice in a small community. These factors make it difficult to consider community hospital practice as a career option. It is hoped that this elective will provide residents with an insight into community anaesthesia practice.
Objectives
The Community Hospital Electives has the following objectives:
- To provide a resident with a perspective of anaesthetic practice other than that provided at a University centre.
- To allow the resident to participate in a community anaesthetic practice in a non-university hospital.
- To enable a resident to experience, first-hand, the range of practice possibilities which are associated with community anaesthesia.
Availability
1. Any time of the year, depending on arrangements made among the community anaesthetist, resident, program director and the resident's base hospital.
2. The elective will be available to residents with 2 full years of anaesthetic training and in particular those in their final year of the program.
Organization
The Community Hospital Elective will involve a week (possibly more) in a community apart from the base hospital. Therefore, the resident will be unavailable for call at the base hospital.
In the community hospital the resident will be working under the direct supervision of the local preceptor anaesthetist. The resident will be expected to make preoperative and postoperative visits of patients. He/She will not be expected to be the primary or sole anaesthetist on call at any time during this experience.
In addition, the resident should be prepared to present a topic of academic, clinical, or research interest to the local anaesthetic staff at some point during the visit. The resident will be expected to arrive in the community on the Sunday afternoon prior to the week of the elective. Accommodation will be arranged through direct communication with the preceptor and in some cases may involve living in the preceptor's residence. There may be other arrangements depending on local circumstances.
The resident will be expected to provide transportation and living expenses. However, depending on the local arrangements, some of these costs may be minimal. For further information and details with names of the local liaison anaesthetists, contact the Program Director.
The following communities have been selected to provide this experience:

An evaluation form (ITER) will be completed by the local supervising anaesthetist. The resident will be asked to evaluate the elective experience.
NOTE: This program must be arranged through the Program Director's Office and cleared by the Program Coordinator at the base hospital.
