Department of Anesthesia, University of Toronto
Message from the Fellowship Program Director
Dr. Doreen Yee
The University of Toronto Anesthesia Department offers a number of fellowship positions in general and subspecialty training through its seven partner teaching hospitals across eight sites. Over 300 faculty work at these sites, many of whom are internationally and nationally renowned leaders in their specialty areas.
Historically, the University of Toronto is known for its early use of cyclopropane, work in malignant hyperthermia and identification of the abnormal cholinesterase enzyme in succinylcholine metabolism. Presently, world class research is being conducted in anesthetic and pain mechanisms, models of brain injury, perioperative cardiac risk assessment, blood conservation, ultrasound techniques in regional anesthesia and education and team training using anesthesia simulation. Clinically, we are leading the way in many areas, including advances in Ultrasound based Regional Anesthesia, Trauma and Critical Care, Cardiac Anesthesia, and the implementation of Anesthesia Care Teams (ACTs) in Canada.
University of Toronto (UT) is renowned as one of Canada’s best teaching and research universities and largest medical school. The Faculty of Medicine is a leader in medical knowledge transfer and the evolution of interprofessional health care teams, just to mention a few. Similar to living in multicultural Toronto, the university’s size and diversity offers a multitude of opportunities and resources for ongoing education and research.
About the Program
All Fellows are registered through UT Faculty of Medicine's Post-Graduate Medical Education. This permits access to a variety of benifits, including the extensive Library Services and other student discounts.
Our current fellowships are hospital based and successful applicants generally spend their time at one centre. Fellowships can range from 6 months to 2 years (maximum of 3 years), although a minimum of a year is preferred for optimizing the fellowship experience. Research opportunities in both clinical and basic areas are available and encouraged. A list of fellowships offered through UT's Department of Anesthesia can be found here.
